How to Use this Website
This site includes both written music notation and listening examples. The section on music basics will help you understand the notated examples. Two types of listening examples are used on this website: embedded audio files and links to Naxos Music Library.
- Embedded Audio - Many of the examples in the basic structures section use emedded audio examples. Most web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari,...) will automatically download any plugins needed to play these examples. I recommend updating your browser to the most recent version to ensure that it is capable of playing the embedded examples. If everything is set up correctly, you will see an embedded example below. Click the play (arrow) button to hear the example.
- Naxos Music Library - Naxos is an online library of recordings that can be played as streaming audio in your browser. Many colleges, universities, and music-oriented business subscribe to Naxos, and personal subscriptions are available at a reasonable cost. The direct links to Naxos used on this website will only work for users associated with the University of Colorado at Boulder, however, the catalogue number and track numbers will be provided for each listening example so that other users will be able to locate the recordings through their own subscriptions as well.
- CU Boulder Users - You must be on campus using the CU network for internet access, or you must be using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to access Naxos. For help setting up a VPN, visit the CU ITS website: CU VPN Information.
- Subscriptions Through Organizations other than CU Boulder - In order to use a subscription owned by an organization to which you belong, you must use the local network provided by that organization (i.e. access Naxos on campus), or you must use the VPN (Virtual Private Network) provided by that organization. Each organization handles this differently, so we cannot offer technical assistance in this matter. Usually the IT department or Help Desk of your organization can help you set up a VPN.
- Personal Subscriptions - To set up a personal subscription, visit the Naxos website and create a new account according to the instructions there. When using a personal subscription, you may need to sign into your Naxos account when you follow one of our links to their library.
Check your Naxos connection on the link below to Mozart's Variations on Ah vous dirai-je, maman. Remember, the main link will only work for CU users. Other users should click 'Naxos' below, sign in to their account, search for the album by the catalogue number (in this case, MC131), follow the link to the album page, and then scroll down to find the correct disk and track.
